A transverse section of the European mistletoe (Viscum album L.) haustorium inside the host tree tissues (Betula pendula Roth.) – a specific organ of parasitic plants

Summary[edit]

Description
австрійська (V. album subsp. austriacum (Wiesb.) ялицева (V. album subsp. abietis (Wiesb.)
English: Haustorium is a special parasitic organ of the European mistletoe (Viscum album subsp. album L.) semi-parasitic lifestyle, which connects its conductive tissues with the host xylem or phloem to get water and nutrients. In Eastern Europe, and in Ukraine in particular, there are 3 subspecies of semi-parasitic plant Viscum album L., which parasitizes different hosts: V. album subsp. album L. affecting more than 450 species of deciduous trees, V. album subsp. austriacum (Wiesb.) Vollm. "specializing" on pines and sometimes choosing larch and spruce, and V. album subsp. abietis (Wiesb.) Janch.) parasitizing firs. Image was captured using Axio Zoom.V16 Stereo Zoom system (Carl Zeiss, Germany) in bright field illumination (objective lenses PlanApo Z 1.5x, FWD = 30mm). Scale bar: 1 cm.
