In the Presidential elec-tion her citizens voted, by a slight plurality, forBell and Everett and their platform of TheUnion, the Constitution, and the enforcement ofthe laws, while the votes cast for Douglas after hisstrong coercion declaration at Norfolk and the votescast for Lincoln, added to the Bell and Everettvote, appeared to indicate a decided Union pre-ponderance.^ Notwithstanding these manifesta-tions of allegiance, public sentiment took on atone and a determination which, paradoxical as itmay seem, was rebellion in guise of loyalty.
