articular skill claimed I couldnot, and still cannot, see; though there isnothing to criticise except the claims put for-ward for it since. But the Confederate claim-ants for superiority in strategy, superiority mgeneralship, and superiority in dash and prow-ess are not so unjust to the Federal troopsengaged at Shiloh as are many Northern writ-ers. The troops on both sides were American, and united they need not fear any foreign foe.It is possible that the Southern man started inwith a little more dash than his Northern broth-er; but he was correspondingly less enduring. The endeavor of the enemy on the first daywas simply to hurl their men against ours —first at one point, then at another, sometimesat several points at once. This they did withdaring ami energy, until at night the rebeltroops were worn out. Our effort during thesame time was to be prepared to resist assaultswherever made. The object of the Confeder-ates on the second day was to get away with 6io THE BATl^LE OF SHILOH.

Ours then was to drive them from ourfront, and to capture or destroy as great apart as possible of their men and material. We were successful in driving them back, butnot so successful in captures as if further pur-suit could have been made. But as it was,we captured or recaptured on the second dayabout as much artillery as we lost on the first;and, leaving out the one great capture ofPrentiss, we took more prisoners on Monday than the enemy gained from us on Sunday,On the 6th Sherman lost seven pieces ofartillery, McClernand six, Prentiss eight, andHurlbut two batteries. On the 7th Shermanca)jtured seven guns, McClernand three, andthe Army of the Ohio twenty
