Chester A.Arthur was chosen president. A week later,being himself stricken with a fatal illness, heresigned, and Mr. Sidney Dillon was electedto take his place. The contributions receivedup to this time amounted to $114,000. InApril, 1887, Mr. Cornelius Vanderbilt becamepresident of the association, and was suc-ceeded in February, 1888, by ex-Mayor Wil-liam R. Grace. After considering various measures forproviding a proper sepulcher, a number ofprominent architects were invited to submitcompetitive designs for a monumental tomb.In September, 1890, the association adoptedthe plan furnished by Mr. J. H. Duncan ofNew York City, for a structure to cost be-tween $r)00,000 and $600,000; and this design,with some slight modifications, was adheredto in the construction of the monument nowcompleted. In col-lecting the amounts written upon the sub-scription-books the difference between theactual subscriptions and the amount of cashreceived from them amounted to less than$400. The entire amount was furnished bythe people of the city of New York, with theexception of $38,115.20, which was receivedfrom citizens of BrookljTi, of the interior ofthe State, and of a few other States. As-suming that the average amount of the in-di\idual subscriptions to the sum of $155,000originally secured was the same as that ofthe subsequent fund raised, the number ofcontributors to the entire fund may be saidto be, in round numbers, 90,000.
