Sirenen. Elefanten 587 Dugong fehlt der Scham- beinfortsatz völlig und die Gelenkpfanne ist entweder winzig klein oder fehlt. Wie man sieht, entspricht die Reihenfolge der Beckenfor- men genau der Aufeinander- folge der Formationen. Von anderen innerhalb ,<*?^^='"^'^'^^ Elefanten, der jetztlebenden Säuge- tiere isoliert dastehenden Formen erwähnen wir noch dieElefanten. DieGruppe zeichnet sich in der Jetzt- zeit bekanntlich aus u. a. durch die Rückbildung sämtlicher Schneidezähne mit Ausnahme eines Paares im Zwischenkiefer, die zu großen Stoßzähnen geworden sind; weiter durch die eigenartige Ausbildung der Backenzähne, deren Krone in eine Reihe quergestellter Platten zerlegt ist, die durch Zement zu- sammengehalten werden; außer- dem haben die Backenzähne noch die Besonderheit, daß sie einer nach dem anderen erscheinen, so daß gleichzeitig in jeder Kieferhälfte stets nur i, höchstens 2 Zähne auf einmal in Funktion sind. Der älteste bekannte Elefant ist der oligozäne Palaeomastodon.^) Diese Gattung besitzt bereits die eigenartige Schädelform (Fig. 38 A) der jetztlebenden Elefanten, aller- dings weniger durch Lufthöhlen auf- gedunsen und mit mehr normalem Unterkiefer; die Nasenöffnung ist i) Es erscheint uns bislang nicht ' „ , ,, .,, ■ , , 1 Fig. 58.
