Title
Revival of Lazarus
Description

The freestanding group of figures depicts the raising of Lazarus. Lazarus had already been dead in the grave for four days. With a clear gesture, Jesus calls Lazarus out of the grave. He follows the rabbi's call and appears wrapped in bandages and already marked by the beginning decomposition. His two sisters, Mary from Bethany and Martha, witness the miracle. This depiction forms the conclusion and culmination of the three revival scenes (the revival of the young man of Naïm, that of the daughter of Jaïrus and that of Lazarus). The raising of Lazarus, four days after death, is a tremendous event. With this tremendous miracle, Jesus revealed: I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. (Jn 11:25-26) This scene thus also points to the following one: to the angel at the empty tomb of Christ, who is also depicted as a brocene free sculpture in the Widnau cemetery.
