STRUCTURAL SECTIONS IN ALLEGANY COUNTY iIARYLA>-D GEOLOGICAL SURVEY 161 by Allegany county seems to have been elevated and possibly to asufficient extent to allow of some erosion, although this is not proven.However, in Virginia and Pennsylvania, local non-conformities existbetween the Oriskany and the Eomney, and it seems probable that thechanges in Allegany county were in harmony with the movements■which broiight aboiit the non-conformities to the north and south.The lower shales, resting with sharp contrast upon the Oriskany, areextremely fine and highly carboniferous. Various hypotheses havebeen given to explain the manner of deposition of these fine sedi-ments. It would seem that a gentle subsidence after emergencemight so affect the currents that, sweeping swiftly over the arenaceousbeds they might thoroughly wash away any superficial coating whichmay have previously collected there.
