Otherof his work L may conven-iently notice in the numberof Harper s Monthly forSeptember, 1879 (threecuts at pp. 484, 485, and487). That after Casilearis of his best, not betteredby those useless perpen-diculars again in the sky;the Hubbard is weak, yetmore weakened by stillworse perpendicularity; andin the Sunset on the Hud-son, Sandford R. Gifford,what might have been anexcellent piece of tone isspoiled by the same lazyoffensiveness. I say lazy,because it seems to methat much of this cross-lining is done only to savethe trouble of consideringdirection of lines in thefirst place, or of thinningtoo thick lines when theeffect requires that.
