very short throat sheet ismade vertical, the mud ring being horizontal. The waterspaces around the firebox are large, measuring 6 ins. in frontand 5 ins. on the sides and back at the mud ring, which .paceis gradually increased toward the crown sheet. The flues arespaced with %-in. bridges. The dome, which because of clearance limits is built verylow, is made in the form of a single steel casting; it is fittedwith a Rushton throttle, which has two steam outlets, oneon either side, and takes steam from the top only. The illus-tration showing the cross section of the dome makes this con-struction clear. The throttle chamber connects to bosses onthe dome casting, with ball joints, and the steam passage iscontinued outward to steam pipes, which pass outside of theboiler shell to the high-pressure cylinders located directlybelow the dome. These outside pipes are heavily lagged,and connect to the dome and cylinder castings with the usualground joints. AMERICAN ENGINEER AND RAILROAD JOURNAL.
