$239,316,814. In 1899 the fuel used by loco-tives cost $77,187,344; in 1903 it cost $146,509,031, an increaseof $69,321,6S7. Comparing operating expenses with workdone, it appears that in 1899 for every dollar expended foroperation the railways were able to carry 17 passengers and165 tons of freight one mile. In 1903 the passenger mileagefor each dollar expended in operation amounted to 16.6 andthe freight mileage to 138. Each $1 of operating expensesin 1899 brought in $1.53 in revenue, not including that frommiscellaneous services, while in 1903 it brought in $1.38 only.—The Engineering Record. Watebpboof Glue.—A waterproof glue may be made fromthree parts of gum shellac and one part of India rubber, thesebeing dissolved separately in ether under the influence ofheat, and the two solutions mixed and kept for a time in asealed bottle.
