| Description | Video of the left elevator from the Ameristar Charters Flight 9363 accident aircraft undergoing dynamic load testing to determine if the winds experienced by the aircraft while parked prior to the attempted flight could have created dynamic loads sufficient to force the elevator's inboard geared-tab linkage into an overcenter position and jam the elevator. The wind loads on the elevator are simulated by hanging weights from it; the dynamic effect of wind gusts abruptly slamming the elevator against its down stop is simulated by raising the elevator to the neutral or full-up position using a forklift and then releasing the elevator to fall to the full-down position. Two of the tests are shown; at a simulated wind speed of 55 knots, dropping the elevator from the full-up to the full-down position does not cause the geared-tab linkage to become locked overcenter, but, when the simulated wind speed is increased to 60 knots, dropping the elevator from the full-up position does result in an elevator jam. |
