open out careers for her sons. p THE NATIVE STATES OF INDIA. INTBOD. Judging from the increasing numbers of thoughtful mindswho now-a-days devote themselves to the considerationof these important questions, the subject will, it iscertain, sooner or later attract earnest attention, and betreated in a manner which its importance demands.Meanwhile it is possible that the task may be facihtatedby a sketch giving an insight into the past career andhistory of the Native States. That career, it must beowned, displays little of the action of the people, but,hke the history of all Governments of the past, consistssimply in the wars, the exploits, and the successions oftheir rulers. But the story is by no means wanting inevents of interest, or in indications of hfe and vitahty cal-culated in many instances to excite the pride of the rulersand the ruled of these States in their past. And pride inthe past, I need hardly say, affords the best guarantee fordevelopment and improvement in the future.

PAET I.-RAJPUTANA. CHAPTER I. tJDAIFUR or MEWAB. Area—11,614 sq. miles. Popitlation—1,161,400. Ketbnue—About 4,000,000 rupees. With the exception of Jaisalmir, writes the learned ceap.author of the Annals and Antiquities of Rajdsthau, —^— Mewar is the only dynasty of tliese races which hasoutlived eight centuries of foreign domination in the samelands where conquest placed them. The Eana still pos-sesses nearly the same extent of territory wliich hisancestors held when the conqueror from Ghizni firstcrossed the blue waters of the Indus to invade India;while the other families now ruhng in the north-west ofEajasthan are the relics of ancient dynasties driven fromtheir pristine seats of power, or other minor brancheswho have erected their own fortunes. This circunistanceadds to the dignity of the Eands, and is the cause of thegeneral homage they receive, notwithstanding the chminu-tion of their power. Though we cannot give the princesof Mewar an ancestor in the Persian Noshirvhistoricalsketch00malluoft
