An old Walapai Indian couple with Indian interpreter, Kingman, Arizona, 1902
Photograph of an old Walapai Indian couple with Indian interpreter, Kingman, Arizona, 1902. The old man is sitting on the ground. His forearms are resting on his uplifted knees. He is wearing a checkered vest over a light shirt and trousers. A patterned bandana is tied around his neck. A hat sits on his head. He is wearing shoes. His dark hair has bangs in front and is cropped straight across at his neck. He is turned slightly to his right. The old woman sits on the ground at his right. She is wearing a long checkered dress under a striped blanket or shawl pulled about her shoulders. A pottery water jug sits between her bent knees. Her dark windblown hair reaches her shoulders. The Indian man sitting to their left on a stool or box covered by a striped blanket is an interpreter. He wears dark trousers and a dark vest over a light striped shirt with a striped bow tie. A hat is on his head. He has shorter dark hair. A watch chain extends from the second button hole to the left pocket of the vest. His hands are on his lap. A wooden wall is behind them.
