my, and would shelter theguards—3,000 in number. On the four angles of the stock-ade were erected the most formidable earthwork forts thatI have seen anywhere in the South. The height from theditches to the summit, almost perpendicular, must be fuilyeighteen feet. On these earthworks cannon commandedevery part of the stockade, inside and out, so that an attackfrom either the prisoners or their rescuers would have metwith a terrible artilley lire. A line of rifle pits was dug out-side of the stockade Avails for the use of infantry. Thestockade was originally intended to hold 10,000 prisoners,and then enclosed seventeen acres. The creek, with its wide,swampy margin, and the dead line cut out at least sevenacres, leaving not. more than ten upon which men could live.On this ground they were crowded in until it finally becamepacked with human beings like a stock yard filled with cattle.
