I could not decline. Re-turning to Jackson county, I preached farewell sermons at Andrewand Maquoketa. I took up my work here on the 12th of April, andby the exceeding divine goodness I have continued here to this daythe ministry which I received of the Lord Jesus to testify the gos-pel of the grace of God. I have never swerved from this purpose,while I have thought it accordant therewith to devote some time toliterary and historical studies which show the influence of Christ-ianity in bettering the character and condition of mankind in dif-ferent departments of the worlds affairs. I have discoursed uponthe great discoveries and inventions of the last sixty years as newevidences of the divine wisdom and goodness in the nature ofthings. In the civil war, much as I deplored all war, I stood resolutelyby President Lincoln and the Union. I carried my ministry to thesick and wounded and dying in many hospitals in Tennessee andGeorgia. Sickened with such sights, andwith my hospital work, I now returned home wearied and worn, andit was a month before I could be about again. At different periods I have sailed down the St. Lawrence toQuebec and down the Mississippi from St. Paul to New Orleans. Ihave crossed the Rocky Mountains, and sailed on the Columbia, onthe Willamette, and on Puget Sound, and felt assured of the futuregreatness of that part of the world.
