Gallery of Florence, where it wasplaced in the Hall of ancient and modern painters.The poet, Erasmus Darwin, although he cannotbe taken as a great judge of art, sings her powersin the following lines :— Long with soft touch shall Darners chisel charm ;With grace delight us and with beauty warm ;Fosters fine form shall hearts unborn engageAnd Melbournes smile enchant another age. The bust of Lady Elizabeth Foster, afterwardsthe Duchess of Devonshire, to which Darwinhere refers, is now in the possession of the Dukeof Devonshire, and that of Viscountess Mel-bourne is in the collection of the Earl Cowperat Panshanger. Among other busts that she carved from lifeand imaginary heads may be mentioned thatof Sir Joseph Banks in the British Museum, andthat of Thalia, a portrait of her friend, MissFarren, the well-known actress, who in 1797married the twelfth Earl of Derby as his secondwife. HER ART statue of George III., which stands over eightfeet high, and is placed in the Register Officeof Scotland at Edinburgh. Her uncle, LordFrederick Campbell, was at the time Lord ClerkRegister of Scotland, and to his influence, ratherthan to its value as a work of art, the statueowes the distinguished place which it occupies.It is roughly carved, but was a gigantic workfor a woman to undertake. A model of an osprey in terra-cotta was highlyprized by Horace Walpole, in whose possession itwas at Strawberry Hill. Concerning this gift hewrote to Lady Ossory : I hope your ladyshipwill approve of the motto I design for it. Do youremember the statue at Milan with this legend : Non me Praxiteles, sed Marcus finxit Agrati. He therefore had the following pentameterengraved beneath the group :— Non me Praxiteles finxit, at Anna Darner. Not me, Praxiteles, but Darners hand hath formed. She also executed a bust of her father, and twobusts of her mother; one in Portland stone, whichshe placed
