Notes Nicholas Stogdon (Christopher Lennox-Boyd database) follows Ganz in querying whether this might not be the portrait of Roestraeten mentioned by George Vertue: 'in Mr Dagen sale of Prints, drawings &c, a mezzotinto head of ... Roestraeten painter. Squeezing of a lemon' (Vertue, 'Notebooks', in Walpole Society, vol. XVIII, p. 26). See Lindsey Bridget Shaw, 'Pieter van Roestraeten and the English 'Vanitas in Burlington Magazine, vol. 132, no. 1047 (1990), p. 404. Ganz describes the print as an allegory of taste.
