A patio with a covered loggia and enriched with colored tile, desertflagging and .semi-tropic planting opens off the lobby in an effort to createan atmosphere that might contrast with that of the average city hotel. Within the building the thought has been first, comfort with all theneces.sary conveniences to give it, and, second, cheerfulness. Brightchintzes and cretonnes have been used for hangings. The lobby has been very simply treated. The ceiling is cofferedwith conventional designs and colored in the .sockets, and the wholeglazed down to give the impression of old, .softened plastered surfacesthat might have been found in an Italian villa. Green, Ijlack and red have been used in the .spacious cafe becauseof the inherent cleanliness of these colors and to create a contrast fromthe soft tones in the lobby adjoining. 40 THE ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER
