Text Appearing Before Image:
PROGRESS PICTURE. GRACE CATHEDRAL. SAN FRANCISCO ETCHING BY W. C. F. GILLAM THE ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER ^ 15 ^ DECEMBER, NINETEEN THIRTY-FOUR setting buttresses against the outer walls, the lancet windows with their leaded jew-el-like glass, the noble lofty-vaulted inter-iors whose great piers rise up to divide andfan into the intersecting arches of the ceil-ing—all these are characteristic and tradi-tional forms of the architecture that devel-oped in those times of devout faith andglorious church history. Moreover, thereis a harmony of proportion and of scaleand a dignity and a simplicity of treatment
Text Appearing After Image:
Photo by Homer Hadley DETAIL OF CHAPEL WALL that even to the lay observer indicate studyand care and ripe reflection. Such resultsare not achieved haphazardly. There is, however, one departure fromtradition which is bound to challenge archi-tectural judgment and approval. Thiscathedral which when completed will havefew rivals in our western country in re-spect either to magnificence of size or rich-ness and costliness of finish — this greatcathedral set upon a hill for the Gothic de-sign of which stone is the traditional ma-terial—is being built of concrete! There isa light built up, latticed frame of structuralsteel which constitutes the reinforcementbut extensively within and almost com-pletely without, concrete is the materialwhich forms the final finished surfaces ofthe structure. If contemporary Gothic designs must ofnecessity conform fully with the original—shall they be called classical—Gothic de-signs, then the anachronism of concretesbirth everlastingly estops its use
