hievement, realized. The articleis published just as Mr. OShaughnessywrote it in anticipation of the ceremonieswhich would mark the completion of theproject, and which took place on October29th. Water Engineerins Triumphby M. M. OShdushnessy P LANS for bringingto San Francisco the pure water from thesnowfields of the Sierra, first visioned over60 years ago, are to be realized in October. The tunnel through the Coast RangeMountains, where the last excavation wascompleted in January, is now being linedwith concrete. Somewhat less than two miles of lining is still to be placed and uponits completion the 150-mile aqueduct willbe ready to deliver water from HetchHetchy reservoir in Yosemite NationalPark by gravity flovv to Crystal Springsreservoir in San Mateo County. The bringing in of this water is a mostgratifying culmination of a project defi-nitely planned in 1901 under the adminis-tration of the late Mayor James D. Phelan. ^ 34 ► ■t1^^5^^^ ^^^s«5^liiS^*«PS^, :m f\\^^ js^^*^**Vfi

^- O SHAUGHNESSY DAM ON TUOLUMNE RIVER IN YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARKThe dam has a total height of 344 feet which will be increased to 430 feet at a cost of $3,500,000.The present dam was completed in 1923 at a cost of $7,000,000. It was obstructed in every possible way byzealous foes, but doggedly advancedagainst these obstacles. After 12 years ofbattle, a congressional grant, known as theRaker Act, signed by President Wilson inDecember, 1913, gave the city permissionto build dams and conduits in the nationalpark. Certain stipulations in the act re-quired the city to begin construction im-mediately, but prohibited bringing in thewater as long as sufficient other water wasavailable for the citys use. Consequentlythe plan of construction adopted was firstto complete the devolpment of electricpower at Moccasin Power House thusbringing the city a total revenue of $19,000,000 during the construction periodand then to construct the remaining por-tion of the aqueduct on the most economi-cal time
