Temple Structure

Summary[edit]

Description
English: This is a simple Hindu temple with Nagara architecture. Some key sections marked, many sections are not marked. The Antarala is between the mandapa and the grabhagriya. On outer walls are niches which would typically show sculpture, reliefs or steles narrating Hindu legends, texts or henotheistically show deities from various traditions of Hinduism such as Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Shaktism and Sauraism. Some temples may also show major saints, scholars or regionally popular spiritual leaders. The pillars and ceilings are generally carved with symbolic motifs and friezes from Hindu texts / fables, many showing themes of dharma, artha, kama and moksha. The grabhaghriya (sanctum, adytum) typically is simple with a murti whose iconography is filled with symbolism. A Hindu would normally be able to visually read and connect with the friezes, circumambulate the sanctum and then complete the darshana of the sanctum.
