In his guidance of theactors who are his principal support,Mansfield has a fine and true feeling fordramatic harmony; there is a thoroughstudy of manners, exquisite skill in minuteportraiture, and historical fidelity. One of his friends says that Mansfieldrealizes that he is sometimes nervous andirritable and that he frequently begins arehearsal with a note to die effect that hemay say things he does not mean andthat he hopes his people will try andunderstand him. As for the newspaper men, one of themin enumerating the well-known man-nerisms of Richard Mans-field, said recently: Perhaps somebody tookout an accident insurancepolicy, hired a corps of pri-vate detectives for a body-guard, donned chain-armor,and then gently apprisedhim of these things.
