English: Memorial to Lieutenant-Colonel Augustus Henry Archibald Anson, VC (1835-1877), VC, a son of Thomas Anson, 1st Earl of Lichfield. He was a recipient of the Victoria Cross and a Member of Parliament for Lichfield from 1859 until 1868, and for Bewdley from 1869 to 1874. He married Amelia Claughton, a daughter of the future first Bishop of St Albans, Rev. Thomas Legh Claughton. Arms on a shield couchée: Anson (Argent, three bends engrailed and in the sinister chief point a crescent gules) impaling Claughton (Per chevron embattled ermine and sable, in chief two fleurs-de-lys azure in base a tower or), with crest of Anson above: Out of a ducal coronet or a spearhead proper. His Victoria Cross is visible at left. See also |
