dry. Treatment Before Planting. Before planting prune off all broken and extra long roots.Peach, plum, apricots, etc., should have side limbs and top cut back to at least half the length. Planting. Dig holes large enough to allow the roots of the tree to spread out in their naturalposition, carefully placing the finest and best soil from the surface in among the roots; whenthe soil is nearly filled in, thoroughly settle the earth by filling in the hole with water; after itsettles, fill in the remainder of earth. In most soils the use of water to settle the earth is muchbetter than treading the soil with the foot. After Culture. The ground should be kept loose and free from weeds. It is advantageous ina dry climate, like ours, to throw around the tree, for a distance of two or three feet each way,a mulch of rough manure or litter. It prevents the ground from drying out and baking. Address all correspondence to THE ARMSTRONG NURSERIES, JOHN S. ARMSTRONG, Proprietor, ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA.
Text Appearing After Image:
Xo fruit trees have commanded wider attention nor elected higher prices duringthe past two years than the orange and the lemon. This is due in large measureto the excellent returns that citrus growers have been receiving for their fruit. Inview of this we have always endeavored to grow only high grade trees, beingkeenly alive to the fact that good trees are essential to the growing of good fruit. At the same time there has been no desire to increase prices over previous years. We are offering this season an exceedingly choice lot of robust and well growntrees in the several varieties. Prices: Large size, well branched, $2.00; medium size, branched, SI.50; small size, parti)- branched, SI.00. THE ORANGE Washington Navel. This variety has madeCalifornia oranges famous the world over. Ithas been one of the most profitable from thegrowers standpoint. The tree is a good thriftygrower, making a well-rounded, uniform top;bears heavily and regularly. The fruit is largewith a peculiar formationarmstrongnurseri1911arms
