Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A very large explosive eruption occurred at Russia’s Bezymianny volcano on the afternoon of December 21, 2017, with a column of ash and gas rising to about 50,000 feet and drifting more than 85 km (53 mi) to the northeast. Ash was continuously observed on satellite images through December 22.

Bezymianny volcano sits near the center of the Kamchatka Peninsula in far eastern Russia. Until it erupted violently in 1995-1956, it had been considered an extinct volcano. Although relatively small in size it is one of the most active volcanoes in the region.

On December 21, 2017, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of copious gray ash from Bezymianny coating the winter-white snow of Kamchatka. The horseshoe shaped crater of the volcano sits in the south-west corner of the image (lower left) and the ash stretches to the northeast.
