Description

Diese zweite Fassung beschreibt Kopisch in einem erhaltenen Brief an den Berliner Bankier und Sammler Joachim Heinrich Wilhelm Wagener (zitiert nach Ausst.-Kat., Berlin, 2016, S. 239):
"Man sieht über die pomptinischen Sümpfe in das tyrrhenische Meer, in welches die Sonnenscheibe soeben versinken will. Der purpurrothe Scirokkohimmel wird von Ueberschwemmungswassern gespiegelt, welche der Fluß Nymphaeus zum Meere führt. Im Hintergrund zur Linken erhebt sich aus den schilfigen Ebnen das Vorgebirge Monte Circello die vormalige Insel der Kirke; noch ferner eine der Ponza-inseln. Zur Rechten des Flußes sieht man eine verfallene Wasserleitung aus den Zeiten der Caesaren; im Vordergrunde eine halb römische, halb mittelaltrige Burgruine mit rundem Thurm. Die Staffage bildet eine Heerde wilder Büffel, die von Ufer zu Ufer schwimmt."
