Diagram of British Capped Armour-Piercing shell Mk VIIA, for BL 9.2 inch coast defence gun.
Explosive filling is 33 lbs lyddite including 4 oz picric powder exploder, in an aluminium container varnished on the inside. This was necessary to totally eliminate the possibilty of the lyddite coming into contact with any metal bases, which would lead to unstable picrates forming, risking spontaneous explosion. |
