the roar surged forward (/^. 243). Afghans that more than once they reached theabattis, but each time they were driven backwith heavy loss. About ten oclock there was alull, and it seemed that the attacking force wasowning the frustration of its attempts ; but anhour later there was a partial recrudescence ofthe fighting, and the assailants once more cameon. The attack, however, was not pushed withmuch vigour, and was soon beaten down,but the Afghans still maintained a threateningattitude, and the fire from the defences was in-effectual to dislodge them. The General then enemy wavered, and soon were in full retreat.The Kohistanee contingent, some 5,000 strong,cut loose and marched away northward withobvious recognition that the game was up. Thefugitives were scourged with artillery and riflefire ; and Massy led out the cavalry, swept theplain, and drove the lingering Afghans from theslopes of Siah Sung.
