Wolverine. Michigan has been nicknamed the Wolverine State because thewolverine was so plentiful within its borders. It gets its name fromits wolfish habits, but it belongs to the weasel family. It is the largestof that family, being from two to three feet long. It is a low, squat,heavy-bodied animal and its sharp claws, powerful build, and its per-sistence and cunning, make it a dangerous enemy for much largeranimals and even for man. It frequently trails trappers along theirtrap lines, eating or destroying their catches and at times hiding theirtraps. A wolverine has often been known to expend a surprisingamount of labor in apparently deliberate mischief, even carryingnumerous articles away from camps and hiding them in different NATIVE LIFE—FIRST EVIDENCES OF HUMAN LIFE. 25 places.
