More than half of the investment in equipmentand associated plant is accounted for by the 2,000 telephonerepeaters employed in program transmission service. Theserepeaters have been designed especially to meet the require-ments of program transmission service. They are more costlyand differ from the repeaters used in telephone message servicein several important respects. For example, they will transmita wider band of frequencies and a wider range of volume. Theyintroduce less distortion through the use of special transformersand contain more refined adjustment features provided byspecial equalizing equipment which are necessary where pro-grams are to be transmitted over very long distances.
