In the perform-ance of his professional duties his genial nature and kindly wordswere in themselves medicine to his patients. In many capacitieshe was recognized as a prudent and wise counsellor. To his variedacquirements he added a warmly sympathetic nature, a catholicspirit and a modest bearing. The nobler side of human naturealways found ample room for exercise in his calling. Dr. Warren was a man of marked executive ability and publicspirit, and belonged in the front rank of those eminent, far-sightedphysicians who have grown up with the expanding interest of ourCommonwealth and have helped shape its life and ideals. Hislife record is filled with honorable achievement and well illustratesthe possibilities for usefulness which are open to any American boyof high purpose, energy and unflinching Christian principles.

Q=^^h^^^x TT^t^^u^ SAMUEL WARREN SAMUEL WARREN, leather manufacturer, was born inAuburn, Massachusetts, October 15, 1834. His father,Waterman G. Warren, who was born May 16, 1807, and diedAugust 7, 1886, was a tanner. His mother, Mary Eddy, who wasborn February 7, 1806, and died September 3, 1887, exercised apositive and enduring influence for good over her son in his develop-ing years. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Warren, July31, 1779-September 10, 1832, and Sally Goulding, 1790-November20, 1861. He is in the direct line of descent from John Warren,who came from England to Boston June 12, 1630, and was made afreeman, May 18,1631. Samuel Warren gained his education in the Holden High School,the Worcester Academy, and the Westfield Normal School. Hegraduated from the Westfield Normal School in June, 1858. Fora few years he taught school in Holden and West Brookfield,Massachusetts. Not content with this as a permanent vocation,he learned the tanning business, and in 1867 entere
