s the fungi, have cultivated mostcompletely the habit of dependence onother organisms. They attack both plantsand animals, and are often exceedinglydestructive. Among the better known ofthese parasites are the rusts, which at-tack and destroy many of our most usefulcrops. To the fungi there also belong thewell-known bacteria, which are the causeof numerous contagious diseases bothamong plants and animals. It will be ob-served that these parasites are using ex-actly the same sort of food as do the car-nivorous plants. This does not appearso striking in this case, simply becausethe attacking plants are so much smallerthan the organisms attacked that they donot seem to capture them, although theyare often none the less effective in de-stroying them. The may-apple is a small perennial herbwith long root-stocks or undergroundstems (rhizomes), a native of the UnitedStates and Canada, growing in rathermoist woodlands. The rhizomes attaina length of about twelve feet; they aresparingly branched with comparativelyfew roots at the nodes. Upon closer in-spection one may notice the leaf scars andstem scars. Early in the spring the budsituated at the anterior end of the root-stock or rhizome, develops and sends upa stem upon which the leaves and flowerare situated. The entire plant attains aheight of about twelve inches.
