In the Caterpillar our dainty littlefairy presents itself as it appears inits first stage, having just spent a fewdays, or a month, or perhaps the wholewinter in the &gg. It changes its oldskin many times during its Caterpillarlife of twenty or thirty days, at eachchange gaining in weight and bril-liancy, until with the last it appears asa Chrysalis a legless, mummy-likecreature, which maintains its sus-pended position by means of the hookson its tail or by a silken girth aroundits body. A few days before the But-terfly comes forth, it can be seenthrough the thin cases. Finally theskin on the back bursts open and thelittle insect is free.
