be found inlarge numbers. In some districts theyare so numerous that the irrepressibleSparrow, true London gamin that heis, finds himself in considerable dangerof being crowded out. This is perhapsmost evident on the sequestered lawnsof some of the inns of the court, GraysInn Square, for instance, where hun-dreds of Starlings at a time may nowbe observed busily trotting about thegreensward searching for food. Severallong streets come to mind where not ahouse is without its pair or more ofStarlings, who continue faithful totheir chosen roofs, and whose descend-ants settle near as they grow up, wellcontent with their surroundings.House Martins, too, in spite ofrepeated efforts on the part of irritatedlandlords to drive them away bydestroying their nests on account ofthe disfigurement to the front of thedwelling, persist in returning yearafter year and rebuilding their ingen-ious little mud cells under the eaves ofthe most modern suburban villasor terrace houses. —Pall Mall Gazette. THE PIGMY ANTELOPE. (^ I HE Pigmy Antelopes present^ I examples of singular membersJ) I of the family, in that they are~^ of exceedingly diminutivesize, the smallest being no larger thana large Rat, dainty creatures indeed. The Pigmy is an inhabitant of SouthAfrica, and its habits are said to bequite similar to those of its brother ofthe western portion of North America. The Antelope is a very wary ani-mal, but the sentiment of curiosity isimplanted so strongly in its nature that it often leads it to reconnoitre tooclosely some object which it cannotclearly make out, and its investigationsare pursued until the dire answer toall inquiries is given by the sharpspang of the rifle and the answeringspat as the ball strikes the beautifulcreatures flank. The Pigmy Ante-lope is not hunted, however, as is itslarger congener, and may be consid-ered rather as a diminutive curiosityof Natures delicate workmanship thanas the legitimate prey of man.
