igh-bor, in a spirit of misguided zeal, killedone of the old birds and a half-grownone three years ago. The remainingbird screamed about for several days butmust have found a mate, for soon therewas a pair again. Among other resi-dent hawks are the cooper hawk, sharp-skinned hawk and marsh hawk. The foregoing is a list of the residentbirds that have come under my observa-tion here at my home, near Logansport.Doubtless the list might be increased, for one person never sees all. All birdsare friends, but those who can withstandthe rigors of a northern Indiana wintercertainly merit very high praise. In thedays of flying frost and snow it is agreat pleasure to come upon a flock ofsparrows disporting in the edge of thethicket, to hear the quail calling softlyover fields or drifted snow, to catch asight of the cardinal grosbeaks flamingcoat or the jays blue and purple, or haveyour woodland tramp enlivened by thenuthatchs soft nasal yank, yank orthe chickadees merry lay.
