Perhaps you have supposed thatsquirrels live only upon nuts, but if youwill really be on good enough termswith them to be admitted into their con-fidence, you will find that they havequite a varied diet. Many lesser seeds, you will learn thatthey count as delicacies. They are notaverse to a lunch upon some of the in-sects, and certain berries tempt them.Their noses too are keen for savorytoadstools and mushrooms. Most delightful do they consider asalad of young beech leaves. But improvident little fellows theyare when they indulge in eating theyoung and tender beech buds, for shouldthey not be wise enough to know thatthey are then eating scores of beech nutsin a single salad? -ml*)^ THE CANADA GOOSE (Branta canadensis.) The range of the Canada Geese coverstemperate North America. They breedin the northern United States and in thesouthern portions of the British Posses-sions, Canada, Newfoundland, Labrador,and to some extent in the vicinity ofHudson Bay. They are well known andcharacteristic birds and as they winteras far south as Mexico, they migratenorthward in the spring and southwardin the fall in flocks which are usuallylarge and noisy. The migration of veryfew birds attracts more attention thanthat of these birds. Mr. Chapman hassaid: Ornithologists talk of wavesand flights of migrants passing in thenight, but the biannual pilgrimage of theCanada Goose appeals to us all with thedirectness of a personal experience. Wesee the living wedge o£ long-necked birdspassing high overhead; the unbrokensound-waves bring the sonorous honks,with unexpected distinctness to our ears;and we receive an impressive lesson inthe migration of birds.
