ix per cent of its food consists ofinjurious mammals, not more thanseven per cent consists of poultry, andthat it is probable that a large propor-tion of the poultry and game capturedby it and the other Buzzard Hawks ismade up of old, diseased, or otherwisedisabled fowls, so preventing theirinterbreeding with the sound stockand hindering the spread of fatal epi-demics. It eats Ground Squirrels,Rabbits, Mice, and Rats. The Red-shouldered Hawk, whosepicture we present to our readers, is asuseful as it is beautiful, in fact ninetyper cent, of its food is composed ofinjurious mammals and insects. The Sparrow Hawk (See Birds, vol.3, p. 107) is another useful member ofthis family. In the warm monthsGrasshoppers, Crickets, and other in-sects compose its food, and Mice duringthe rest of the year. Swainsons Hawk is said to be thegreat Grasshopper destroyer of thewest, and it is estimated that in amonth three hundred of these birdssave sixty tons of produce that theGrasshopper would destroy. 50
