t really is. Chil-dren are young and thoughtless andlove flowers. But does loving and wish-ing for things which are not ours makeit right to take them? If the teachercan develop the love of nature, can shenot develop the sense of honor also?Cannot the moral growth and the men-tal growth of the child develop to-gether? To love nature is not to ruthlesslyrob her of her treasures. Therefore in collecting for the school-room teachthe children to use thought and care inbreaking the tender branches. Theyshould remember that each flower onthe fruit-tree will in time become fruit.Mother Nature has taken time and lov-ing care to bring forth the leaves andflowers. The different parts of theflowers may be studied without sacri-ficing many blossoms. And the birds, why rob them of nestsor eggs? Many ways can be found forstudying nests, eggs, and birds, withoutcausing suffering. Nature and sciencestudy, taughtby thethoughtlessteacher, can do much harm.—A. G. Bullock inSchool Journal. 141 I> » N
Text Appearing After Image:
AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER. GOLDEN YELLOW RUMP isone of the names often appliedto this most beautiful memberof the Plover family, which isthus made conspicuous and easily rec-ognizable. It is found everywhere inthe United States, from the Atlantic tothe Rocky Mountains, but is rare onthe Pacific coast south of Alaska. Theyare seldom found far inland, their nat-ural home being on the seacoast, oc-casionally frequenting marshy or wetgrounds, though as a rule they preferthe sandy beach and adjacent flats anduplands. During migration theirflight, especially in the spring, is hurried, di-rect and in the night, only stopping torest and feed during the day, returning,it is said, in a more leisurely mannerand largely along the seashore. Whenon the ground these birds run abouton unbended legs, the bodies in ahorizontal position and heads drawndown. While sleeping or restingthey usually sit or stand on one leg.Captain Houdlette of the OceanicSteamship Company caught a Ploverthat came aboard his ship
