Text Appearing Before Image:
toward the sky.And all attired in spring-times sheen. Like summer waves upon the beach,Rolled in long swells the waving wheat.Far as the visive orb could reach. A morning glorys trailing vineWas pushing green arms everywhere. And mixing with the wild woodbine. The clear, sweet piping of the quail,Borne on the freshened morning breeze,Came from far down the velvet swale. The hills tall crest whereon I stood.Seemed to be dipt in a green seaOf flowing vales, mid isles of wood. The meadows fair sloped gently downTowards the rivers rippling marge,Dressed in a flowing emerald gown. A million diamonds of dew Shone full of ever shimmering light, And sparkled bright with every hue. The soft green velvet of the sod,That rippled rich beneath the sun,Was grown an ample couch for God, Where Deity alone might lieAnd lave His soul in limpid joy,Beneath His blue and cloudless sky And dream, and think, if any place In this vast universe of His, Could show so fair, so sweet a face. —L. F. Harman. 210
Text Appearing After Image:
FROM COL. CHI. ACAO. eClENCES 159 (iREAT BLUE HERON. (Ardea herodias). I Life-size. COPYRIGHT 1900, BY A. W. MUMFORO, CHICAGO THE GREAT BLUE HERON (Ardea herodias.) One of the most conspicuous objectsin the landscape of certain regions of theUnited States is the large bird known asthe Great Blue Heron, or Blue Crane,as it is erroneously called in some sec-tions of the country. Watch him as hecomes slowly and majestically flying overyonder river, with his long legs stretchedout far behind, his long neck extendedin front, and his great wings spread outon either side! How easy and gracefulseems his flight! As he approaches atree which stands out boldly against thebackground where he can watch for bothprey and enemies, his long legs dangle ina truly comical manner, his neck is bentin a curious curve and his great wingsflap spasmodically as he alights on abranch just above the water. Here heperches like a great gray statue, with hisneck sticking straight up in the air andwith his head turn
