Grace Sperow, Pasadena, Calif.—Seventeenyears old, entirely blind, and with very little hear-ing. Was in the California School for the Deaf andthe Blind for some time. Joseph Sinkinson is said to be deaf and almostblind. I cannot get the almost defined. Someaccounts place him in California and some in Phil-adelphia. Ada M. Youmans, Chicago, 111.— Is neither to-tally deaf nor totally blind, but has enough of eachsense for some practical use. Madie Woodbury, Danville, 111.— Born in Dan-ville in 1862 ; lost sight at four years of age. Wastaught at home until sixteen years of age, whenshe entered the State School for the Blind at Jack-sonville, where she remained five years. Whentwenty-three years old she began to lose her hear-ing, and at twenty-seven was very deaf. Can hearthe human voice with difficulty; retains speech. 36

EMMA KUBICEK, in 1904 (with MRS. JORDAN). KATIE MCGIRR. The Blind-Deaf Katie McGirr lost sig-ht and hearing- as the resultof exposure in the New York blizzard of 1888, being-then eight years old. She was admitted to the NewYork Institution for the Deaf, New York City, in1890. It is unlikely that her previous educationaladvantages had done much for her. She is a stand-ing refutation of the incorrect statement of some,that the blind always have great difficulty in learn-ing a new system of print, for, after mastering allthe five systems used in this country, she learnedthe almost obsolete Lucas in thirty-six minutes,and the entirely obsolete Frere in even lesstime. The religious instinct is strongly developedin her, as her paper on God, from Our Day Maga-zine, March 1, 1900, given below, sufficiently proves.An exquisite instance of the beauty of her lovingheart was in the case of one who loves her much,for whose safety she prays every night, beingtempted to deny a worthy appeal for help
