Summary[edit]

Description
English: Strong winds blowing over southern Alaska drove snow and glacial sediment across the Gulf of Alaska in early March 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on March 2. The heaviest concentration of tan sediment blows from the Copper River. The Copper River originates from the Copper Glacier and flows through a glacier-scraped landscape, steep mountains, and fields of sand dunes. When the region’s high winds roar through the valley, copious amounts of glacial silt (sediment) is lifted on the wind and driven hundreds of miles before settling over water. The river bed, lined with sand, also carries heavy loads of sediment into the Gulf of Alaska.
