It is hard to distinguish with a low-priced binocular on a thick or rainynight the color of a vessels lights, awhite one sometimes appearing with agreen or reddish tinge, and a green onelooking like a white one. This appliesalso to lightships and lighthouses, andshould make you careful as to your se-lection of a glass. Captain Lecky says the proper way totest a binocular for night use is not tostand at a shop door in broad daylight,trymg how much the glass enlargessome distant clock-face, but to wait tillnightfall and test it by looking up a darkstreet or passage, and if figures beforeonly dimly visible to the naked eye arerendered tolerably clear by the aid ofthe glasses, you may rest assured youhave hit on a suitable instrument. Itis well to go in the first place to anoptician, and not to a shopticianversed in cheap-jack methods.

180 BOAT SAILING, Iron ballast should be coal-tarred^painted, or white-washed with hot lime. Masts and spars should be scrapedand sand-papered. If there are anycracks in them, they should be stoppedwith marine glue before scraping. Ap-pl)^ a coat of wood-filler, then a coat ofspar composition. When hard, give asecond coat. Never apply varnish whenthere is much moisture in the atmos-phere. In the vicinity of New York,wait till the wind is northwest if youwish to secure the best and most bril-liant results. If your boat is white, when repaint-ing dont forget to mix a little bluewith your white lead, raw linseed oiland dryers. This cerulean dash im-proves the look of the paint, and is farbetter than black, which produces aghastly tint.
