Description

Two-third of my way through a 2-week road trip, I left Vancouver and re-entered US for the final stretch back to Los Angeles. And my first stateside stop is the Boeing widebody aircraft assembly plant in Everett, 30 minutes north of Seattle, where I can take a tour (absolutely no photos allowed) and also do planespotting. Dozens of 747-8s and 787s around (plus another 787 not visible - N20904, United Airlines' first 787, in the paint shop).

This is the very first Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental (passenger version), which first flew in March 2011. The Boeing markings are now covered up. The model number of this aircraft is stated as 747-8JK, and JK is the customer code for the Kuwaiti government, indicating that this plane's destiny is to be a VIP transport.

There are two other 747-8Is in the photo: a Lufthansa example on the left, and an unpainted example, most likely for Lufthansa as well, on the right. Lufthansa is the only major operator of the passenger 747-8I, having placed its first one in service in May 2012, and having ordered 20; the only other operators are Korean Air (5 on order), Arik Air of Nigeria (2 on order), and a few VIP private customers. Nevertheless, due to strong sales of the freighter variant of the 747-8, not to mention commonality with older 747s, Boeing does have a product worth marketing, and worth giving the Airbus A380 some headaches.

Right behind N6067E is an early-build Japan Airlines 787 that had been painted with JAL's 2002-2010 "Rising Arc" livery but still has yet to be delivered. JAL, in the wake of its bankruptcy, reverted to the iconic Tsuru (crane), which had been used from 1959 to 2002, in 2011.

In the distance is the Museum of Flight's restoration facility, and the 727 parked there is the very first one built, N7001U of United Airlines which first flew in 1963 and was in revenue service until 1991.
