Of great interest to tourists, some ofthe mission churches, it is true, still stand as monuments tothe brave men who gave their lives to the wilderness. TheChapel of the Alamo in San Antonio is the most famous; theMission Concepcion, a few miles south of San Antonio, is thebest preserved; San Jose, sixty years in building, is the mostbeautiful architecturally. The Mission Ysleta, twelve milesfrom El Paso, is also notable. Active work was again undertaken by the Catholics underthe leadership of Father Odin, Archbishop at New Orleans,who visited Texas in 1840, when only two priests were left inthe republic, and both of these with such unsavory reputa-tions that he immediately discharged them from office.Through the work of himself and other priests who cameafter him, within twenty-one years there were fifty priests
