In 1875 the little town of Indianola, at the westend of Matagorda Bay, was entirely swept away, with theloss of nearly two hundred lives. The great storm of 1900,which swept the sea over the island and the city of Galveston,drowned several thousand people and destroyed an im-mense amount of property.
