is a report made by the captain which explainsitself:— Greenland Sept. 30, 1745. By his Excellency, Mr. BenningWentworths order, I prest 20 men that belonged to my troop toonlode the storeship, but there was but 18 went, and they say theydid three days work. John Brackett Capt. The farm, which Captain Brackett inherited from his father, isstill owned by his descendants; has been uninterruptedly owned byBracketts, passing from father to son since it was acquired by JoshuaBrackett prior to 1725. This farm Captain John gave to his son.Esquire George Brackett of local fame. To his son Benning, hegave the farm in Stratham, another farm in New Market, and a one-half interest in the sawmill at Wadleighs falls. Another son wasDr. Joshua Brackett, one of the most eminent men in the province,who attained distinction both in his profession and as a patriot. MAP OF GREENLAND AND RYE CAPTAIN JOHN, OF GREENLAND 361 at the age of thirty-six, in the year 1753, possessed of an estate ofseveral thousand dollars; John died unmarried, in 1S00, lived withhis brother George, on the homestead. His son Benning was probably named for Governor BenningWentworth, with whom Captain John Braekett was intimately asso-ciated. Captain Braekett, in his day, was one of the most prominentmen in the province; his position as commander of a troop, whichwas intrusted with the occupation of one of the principal forts in theprovince during a time of war, attests his capacity and standing as amilitary man. By marriage he became connected with a family ofrespectability and influence. His wife was Eliza Pickering; to herhe was married December 10, 1724. She was of Greenland, wasdaughter of Thomas, son of John, the immigrant, one of the signerswith Anthony Braekett, of the deed of land for a glebe.
