Founder of Georgia The colony of Georgia was the last founded of thethirteen original colonies. It was established by Ogle-thorpe, a man of noble birth who was animated byprinciples of philanthrophy and patriotism. James Edward Oglethorpe was born in London, about1688. When a youth he entered the army and foughtbravely against the Turks for several years. Afterhis return home his attention was attracted and hissympathy aroused by the condition of prisoners inEngland, especially of poor debtors. In those days debtwas regarded and punished as a crime; debtors wereconfined in prisons with murderers and thieves. Itis thought that Oglethorpes attention was speciallydra^^n to the matter by the sad case of one of hisfriends. This man, being unable to pay his debts, wasimprisoned and loaded with chains; unable to pay eventhe fees required by the jailer, he was confined in amiserable prison where smallpox was raging, caughtthe disease, and died.
