Title
Bronze Age muller or whetstone (plan)
Description
English: Greenstone (epidiorite or dolerite) whetstone or muller with two worked edges, probably used to polish metal, although the base may also have been used as a rubbing stone, to grind grain.

The muller is sub-oval in plan, with one rounded end and one flat, where the edge is slightly damaged. The stone is sub-triangular in section, flat on the side that was used for rubbing, and also worked on the other two oblique faces, where it was used instead as a base for polishing metal implements. The muller base would have been used with a larger saddle quern to grind grain between the stones to make flour.

The shape of the muller suggests that it was probably made from a local beach cobble.

Jones (2002) illustrates similar examples from Callestick on pages 29 & 32, Figs.12-13, Nos.43 & 95 which are dated to the Later Bronze Age, c.1100-700 BC.

Nowakowski (1991) illustrates a similar elvan example from Trethellan on page 142, Fig.57, No.88, which dates from the Middle Bronze Age, c.1500-1200 BC.
