Summary[edit]

Description

Bug Creek Area of Critical Environmental Concern, Montana

Bug Creek is a 3,840 acre area that has been designated as an ACEC due to the stellar paleontological resources present at this locale. The geologic formations and the associated fossils are a rare example of a continuous record spanning the end of the dinosaur age, or Cretaceous Period, and into the beginning of the age of the mammals, during the Paleogene Period.

This area's deposits reveal one of the best records of this transition. The area continues to produce fossils for display and research, gathered by researchers authorized by Federal permit each summer. Federally-recognized institutions and repositories showcase their findings in exhibits and educational programs, while also making the fossils available to U.S. and world-wide researchers. It is the combination of bedrock exposures of the proper age and good fossil preservation within the ACEC that provides an unparalleled opportunity to study and learn about this critical transition in Earth’s history.

Enacted by Congress in 1976, the Federal Land Management and Policy Act or FLPMA created ACECs to protect areas like Bug Creek which need special management because of their unique resources or characteristics.
