In March, when the sunwas swelling the buds of themaples, came the time formaking sugar. The farmersbored holes in the trees, in-serted spouts, caught the sapin buckets and troughs ; hungtheir great kettles upon a pole,kindled fires, boiling the sapuntil it became thick, thus ob-taining their molasses andsugar. Friends and neighborswere invited to a sugaringoff. Then the woods rungwith merry laughter. When spring came—whenthe farmer could drive histeam afield — there was notime for play. There was theploughing, sowing, planting,hoeing of corn and potatoes,washing and shearing ofsheep.
